Old Umayyad coins were initially similar to pre-existing coins but evolved in an independent direction. Coins from Umayyad caliph were the first coins minted by a Muslim government in history. Gold coins were called dinars while silver coins were called Dirham.
The Abbasid Caliphate was the third of the four great Muslim caliphates of the Arab Empire. The Abbasid dynasty descended from Muhammad's uncle, Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, from whom the dynasty took its name. They overthrew the Umayyad to take the power and formed the capital at Baghdad.
Coins of Abbasid have set up a new chapter in the study Numismatics. Abbasid coins differed only slightly from those of their precursors; the Umayyads.
