Like so many other things, coinage was something the Romans adopted from their Greek neighbors. Roman coinage extends over a period of some eight centuries, and saw many changes in denominations, weight standards, design and workmanship. Roman coinage has been extensively studied since the Renaissance, and provides an important source for understanding Roman history, economy, art and culture.
